Memories of Childhood Favorites at Our House

Chances are if you were at our house at mealtime this is what you would have been served. Everyone was welcome at our table, thanks to my mother's warmth and hospitality.

We have so many good recipes out there these days. I think I could stay in the kitchen forever. I still cut out recipes and remove wrappers on the packages and boxes. Can't help myself!!!

I got many recipes from packages & boxes, too, Gail, as did my Mom. Then there was major chaos when the recipe changed! I can remember Mom calling my aunt who still had the recipe (maybe for something on the cocoa box) on hers. Close call! She would have loved all the recipes on the internet! =^..^=

You're welcome, Fran. This was one of my first recipes that I made when I began cooking. We didn't have cookbooks. So, We got the recipes off the backs of packages and jars. Sometimes I would send off for little pamphlets through the mail.

Hi Lillian! Thank you for posting the original. When I was in the 3rd grade in 1963 my teacher brought a hot plate and all the ingredients to make these in our classroom. I think that was the first time that I'd ever tasted them and they were soooo good! Wonder if we didn't all get tipsy from that alcohol! LOL

Hi Gail
Thanks for using my rice krispies in your book.
this is the original recipe from Mrs. Kelloggs
but they took the vanilla because the alcohol
can't be use in children snacks.
But i love the taste and gave it to my children, family and friends
and we are fine and happy .

You're welcome, Ellen. My mom a;ways added about a teaspoon or so of water to hers. That helped them to steam cook. It seems like there is always a little secret that makes the difference.

Wonderful cookbook, Gail, sure to bring back many a memory. I didn't grow up in the South, but several of these recipes are familiar--especially the home fries. My mother made these and when I tried to duplicate them as an adult, they never turned out right. Then I found out that you're supposed to cook the potatoes BEFORE frying them! That made all the difference. Thank you for sharing these great recipes and memories!

You're welcome, Patti-great recipe!
Mari, that's what we did too. I know a lot of families no longer eat their meals at the table together. Thanks for posting a wonderful recipe for bacon.

Gail, Thank you for including my oven fried bacon recipe. This cookbook does remind me of growing up and the many meals we shared every evening around 4:00.. We all would come together at the dinner table - say a blessing and Mom would serve so many of these dishes.

What a great idea to consolidate all the GREAt recipes as a child.
