This is a handed down recipe and a Southern must have especially with turnip greens and pork chops! This is a picture of my great- grandmother; Laura Autrey Huffman (bottom right).

How to Make Mama-N-Em's Hot Water Cornbread

Step-by-Step

  1. Mix together white cornmeal with salt and oil.
  2. Boil water to a rolling boil. Stir the boiling water and the dry ingredients together slowly. Use just enough water for ingredients to stick together without being stiff.
  3. Heat cooking oil in deep fryer to 350-400 dregrees. Have a container of cold water nearby to wet hands while handling the mixture because it is HOT!
  4. Make patties the size of your palm and drop in heated oil. Cool hands as needed. Turn once when they are golden brown. Drain on paper towel.
