My mom was born during the time frame of this cookbook, Ma. She was already baking and cooking in 1930!! In fact, she was married and had two kids by 1930. She probably had pies setting on the window ledge and shooed the flies away! LOL. 1/11/13
ROSE...I was not there ...but
I heard it thru the grape vine!!!
Heard they would put the pies on
the window sill ..to cool.
Then the flies ...came around!.....Hugs ma
P.23 My mom was 100% Pennsylvania Dutch and she used to make Shoofly pies all the time. I never was interested in how they were made because I never acquired a taste for them. However, I think she said it was given that name because flies liked to be around the pies and they would say "Shoo Fly". Don't know if that's why but that's what she had heard too. So you agree with my mom, Ma.
Cold Oven 1800's Pound Cake...I thought it interesting that the recipe calls for 20 Tablespoons of butter. That's 4 Tablespoons short of 3/4 of a pound. 1/11/13
