Here is another very old, 3-layer tried and true cake recipe from the Depression Years! I happened upon this recipe in a shoe box full of grandmas Recipes! I do remember grandma called it her "ANT CAKE".....as children we screamed with delight ... while eating the ants! AW....memories! My granny was an awesome cook and baker. Recipe and foto, is from the Sun-Maid Raisin Growers of California. Nancy....11/11/12

Ingredients

2/3 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar.......( or 1/2 cup sugar)
1/2 cup molasses............(light or dark)
2 - eggs.....beaten
1 cup sour milk............(or butter milk)
1 teaspoon baking soda
2-1/2 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1-1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup walnuts..............(coarsely chopped)
1-1/2 cup sun-maid raisins.........(cut in pieces)

How To Make sun-maid-raisin nut cake 1935 a back of box recipe

Step 1

Cream butter with brown sugar, then add molasses, beaten eggs and sour milk which the baking soda has been dissolved in.

Step 2

mix and sift the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and cloves. Add to this dry mixture, the raisins (cut in pieces) and the walnuts (coarsely chopped). Then combine these dry ingredients with the first mixture.
Step 3

Bake in three (greased and floured layer cake pans. Use square or round cake pans. Bake in a moderate 375 oven. for 25 minutes. Cover (cooled layers) generously with your favorite vanilla icing,or see note below. Then stack the layers..... Grandma never frosted the sides!...... Serve and enjoy.

** NOTE: Re FROSTING: You might take a look at look at, SANDY JONES-"A BLUE RIBBON" Frosting recipe..on "BANANA CAKE with BUTTERCREAM FROSTING" on JAP. It is her family 100 year old frosting recipe. I have used it...and it is delicious!!! No powdered sugar !
