When I was a kid my mom made these all the time. Now my kids (who are grown) make them and I make them for my Grandkids. This is also known as Johnny Cake.

  • 2 c
    plain corn meal
  • 1/4 c
    sugar or splenda
  • 1/4 c
    + 3 tbsp minced onion
  • 1 1/2 c
  • 1 Tbsp
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
  • 1
    egg, beaten

How to Make Southern Style Hush Puppies


  1. Mix together cornmeal, sugar, flour, soda and salt; add onions. Stir egg and buttermilk together and add to dry mixture; mix together and drop by spoonfuls into hot oil. When done hush puppies will float to top. Remove, drain on paper towel. Enjoy!!!
