Side Essentials: Awesome Bread & Butter Pickles

This is my absolute favorite way to make bread & butter pickles.

They are easy to make, and have a deep rich sweet/sour taste that will have you coming back for more.

So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

  • 1 lb
    cucumbers, pickling variety
  • 1 Tbsp
    salt, kosher variety
  • 1/2 medium
    yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 c
    coconut sugar, light variety
  • 1 c
    vinegar, white variety
  • 1/2 c
    apple-cider vinegar
  • 2 tsp
    mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp
    celery seeds
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp
    black peppercorns

How to Make Side Essentials: Awesome Bread & Butter Pickles


  2. Gather your Ingredients (mise en place).
  3. Thickly slice the cucumbers, add to a bowl, and toss with the salt.
  4. Cover and add the pickles to the fridge for 1 hour.
  5. Remove from the fridge, and rinse with water.
  6. Add the cucumbers to a bowl, and toss with the thinly-sliced onions.
  7. Place them into one large container, or two regular mason jars.
  8. Take the remainder of the ingredients, place them into a small saucepan, and bring up to a simmer.
  9. Allow the brine to cool for 30 minutes, then pour it over the pickles.
  10. Seal the jars, and place in the fridge for 24 - 48 hours before serving.
  11. Chef’s Note: The pickles should last 3 – 4 weeks; however, I do not believe they will last that long.
  13. Use in any situation where you need some great-tasting bread-and-butter pickles. Enjoy.
  14. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
