Ingredients For slow cooker apple butter
5 lbapples, peeled, cored & cut into chunks (approx.)
2 cwhite granulated sugar
1 cbrown sugar, lightly packed
2 tspground cinnamon
1/8 tspground cloves
1/8 tspground nutmeg
1/8 tspground allspice
1/2 tspapple cider vinegar (i use raw, unfiltered organic)
How To Make slow cooker apple butter
1Process apple chunks, in batches, in food processor until finely chopped, emptying each batch into bowl of slow cooker.
2Set slow cooker on "high," then add all remaining ingredients; stir until well combined.
3Place lid on slow cooker; cook on high for about 3 hours, stirring every half hour or so.
4Apple butter should be brown and thick. For perfectly smooth apple butter, use immersion blender when it's almost finished cooking.
5To can, immediately ladle into hot, sterilized jars; place sterilized lids on jars and screw on rings; process in boiling water bath 10 mins.
6To freeze, ladle mixture into a large bowl, cover and refrigerate until mixture is cold (I let it chill overnight,) then spoon into small freezer containers or freezer bags.
7NOTE: I've found that there is variation in cooking time and the texture of the apple butter depending on the variety of apple used - adjust accordingly.
