I just couldn't do meat and sauce so this is my version of Sloppy Joe's. It is always a big hit with whoever I make it for. I always hear "I've never had sloppy joe's like this before.

ground beef (95% lean)
1 medium
yellow onion- diced
1 large
green bell pepper- diced
1 lb
crimini mushrooms –sliced
5 stick
celery- sliced across 3/8”
1 medium
pasilla pepper- diced
bay leaves (fresh if available)
15oz can(s)
yellow corn
15oz can(s)
diced tomato
15oz can(s)
stewed tomato
15oz can(s)
tomato sauce
3/4 c
dark brown sugar
4 clove
1 Tbsp
dried oregano
2 Tbsp
smoked paprika
2 Tbsp
dried basil
1 tsp
black pepper coarse grind
1 tsp
kosher flake salt
onion rolls
4 Tbsp
olive oil
2 Tbsp
corn starch
pickled jalapeno slices (optional)

How to Make Really Sloppy Joes-Open Faced


  • 1Brown beef in olive oil
  • 2Add remaining ingredients except for jalapeno, and corn starch
  • 3Cook 1 hour at simmer
  • 4Thicken to desired consistency as this is really a very wet sloppy joe with 2 tablespoons of corn starch and 2 tablespoons of water mixed into a slurry.
  • 5Sprinkle with Jalapeno Slices to taste
