This versatile dough makes more than just bread, it has been a staple recipe in my family for years. And it's fairly simple too! My family uses it for Bread, Pizza crust, foccacia, cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, bread sticks, hamburger and hot dog buns and stromboli crust.

Ingredients For traditional bread

  • 2 1/2 tsp
    yeast
  • 2 c
    water, warm
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 3 tsp
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    cooking oil
  • ~5 c
    flour

How To Make traditional bread

    Bread: Dissolve yeast in water. Stir in remaining ingredients; flour last. Beat 2 minutes. Let rise until double sized, then punch down. Place in greased loaf pans and let rise again. Cook at 350 degrees until golden. -Makes 2 loaves.

    Pizza Crust: Dissolve yeast... etc. After beating 2 minutes, let rest for 5 minutes. Spread onto greased pizza pans. -Makes 2 large crusts, or three smaller crusts.

    Foccacia: Dissolve yeast, etc... Beat 2 minutes, let rest 5. Flatten onto greased cookie sheets or jellyroll pans. Poke indentations evenly throughout. Brush lightly with melted butter or olive oil. Sprinkle with desired seasoning(s) and grated cheese. Bake at 350 degrees until golden. -Makes 2 batches.

    Cinnamon Rolls: Dissolve yeast, etc... Flatten onto cutting board, spread with softened butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roll tightly from long side. Cut with fishing line or thread. Place on greased cookie sheet. Let rise and bake. -Makes about 1 1/2 dozen.

    Dinner Rolls: dissolve yeast, etc... Let rise till double sized then punch down. shape rolls. Let rise a second time for about 15 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees till golden. When done, brush tops with melted butter. -Makes about 1 1/2 dozen.

    Bread Sticks: Dissolve yeast, etc... Flatten onto greased cookie sheets. Cut into strips. Brush with melted butter or olive oil. Sprinkle lightly with salt and/or garlic powder. You may sprinkle with cheese if desired. Let rise a second time, bake. VARIATION: flatten dough onto cutting board; cut into 1/4" wide strips and braid. Then brush, season, let rise; bake. -Makes about 1 1/2 dozen.

    Hamburger/Hot Dog Buns: Dissolve yeast, etc... Let rise 1st time till double sized, then punch down. Flatten onto cutting board about 1" thick. Cut into respective shapes. Place on greased cookie sheets. Let rise a second time about 15 minutes. Bake. When done, let cool then slice accordingly. -Makes about a dozen buns.
