Good idea to add protein powder Dan! And those items that Dee suggested would increase make the bars more healthy too.

Here is a bloggers site that has a recipe for bar that has 17 grams, but not sure about how portable it would be with chocolate covering? chocolatechillimango.com/...bvqhdXSh

I am just reading these comments on Donna's recipe and those on Dan's pic of the bars he made. I'm thinking if you add some ground flax seed, chia seed, etc..and maybe even some soaked or cooked quinoa, or ground raw quinoa, you would get alot higher protein level in the bars that you are trying to achieve. Let me know if you come up with a good mixture. I want to make some with higher protein levels as well. If I figure it out I will let you know.

All you're going to lose by experimenting with Donna's bars is a few bucks worth of ingredients, Dan. You could even cut the recipe in half while you experiment. If you're successful, you'll benefit all of us who need the protein. Remember, the article on baking with whey said to add it to the "dry" ingredients (which is not much in this recipe!)

I'm not a hiker or runner, but since I'm a gastric bypass "survivor," I'm always trying to get a lot of protein in a small amount of food. I hope you'll keep trying to "upgrade" these bars--maybe you'll come up with your own version of

Thanks Jan...interesting observation on the syrup and oil! I ordered a case and it was something like $300 dollars, give or take...now I used them in trips in Alaska and NZ and continental US so I got my worth, but since you can't purchase a useable smaller quantity here my brain has been trying to take Donna's delish health bars and tweak them to get the protien...seriously, I would fine myself at 10,000 feet with a back pack, loosing weight and slamming king-sized candy bars for energy...they would bounce off my body (like we wish that would happen normally!)...but these bars would not only fuel me but actually fill me and leave no appetite between freeze-dried (yuk) meals...

The OSM Bars look incredible, Dan! I wonder why our U.S. ingenuity hasn't produced something similar! Just being nosy...would you be willing to share how much they cost you? Looks like they're VERY pricey even if you live in NZ or AUS., though I'm not sure how their dollars compare to ours. But I was looking at their ingredient list...maybe WE could use brown rice syrup instead of honey, and rice bran oil instead of butter to give our bars better nutrition--taking some hints from their research into nutrition. Every little step is bound to help, don't you think? I'm also going to try the Cosamin ASU you mentioned on another thread.

LOL...of course you are right Jan...I don't want to blow up the bar recipe...I'm thinking like a mad scientist and hope to take Donna's recipe and match these one square meal bars...you cannot get them outside of New Zealand. Check out their site (Donna, you will be interested I think) and look at the ingredients...amazing/I mean, darn near match to Donna's recipe, and so darn healthy and filling! I was able to reach them last year and order a case which they shipped to me but it was too much/too expensive: onesquaremeal.com/index_noflash.html

Eat a bar while you drink a protein shake, Dan! Or eat a lo-fat string cheese with one (adds 8 grams of protein!) Don't mess up the bars! LOL! I can' speak for Donna, but I think you'll probably take these right over the edge to ruin with that much protein powder. (kinda like I did with my SF syrup!)

Check out these Quest Protein Bars: questproteinbar.com/ingredients They were advertising them on the page Donna gave us about baking with whey, and I'm impressed with the ingredient list and the protein-gram/calorie ratio. I haven't tried them, but I think I might order a sample pack. I usually buy Pure Protein bars, but they have more unpronounceable ingredients in them than these.

Thanks Donna :) I added only two heaping scoups (one vanilla, one chocolate) which added only 36 grams of protein for the entire batch (or, 1.5 grams per bar/24 bars to the pan)...not as much as I want, but it was a test case. Now, I would like to try and supercharge them for my endurance sport needs and see if I can add 10x that amount...to do so I have to figure out how to increase the base (butter, oil, honey) to accomodate that many scoups...any ideas?

LOL Jan--you are funny! Yes, I have some soy protein that I need to do something with and now I know what! Dan is a smart man! I need to go back and read how much you added...

I'm going to try adding some whey protein to our next batch, too. Thanks again for the link, Donna. You're right...some people just love to spit and argue! They call them politicians! LOL!

Agreed on all things ladies...and thanks for the link on baking whey protein Donna...I checked some other sites as well and it appears you can bake but should not fry or us other high heat cooking methods, increase your base (butter, oil, etc) to better mix and when possible, add the whey at the end of the process...regardless, seems like baking is ok particularly since it is lower heat...everyone in my family really liked these and I will take a batch with me to Alaska this spring and fall on outing trips.

Jan, I am so glad that I can count on people like you and Dan! Yes, those trolls backed off quickly once I had you all putting them in their places. Some people live just to be naysayers and troublemakers-- which is what I have found through my 56 years.
