- 2 pounds beef for stew, cut in bite-size pieces
- 5 cups water
- 1 cup tomato juice
- 1 can (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 - onion, chopped
- 1 cup celery, sliced
- 2 cups carrots, cubed or sliced
- 1 cup chopped cabbage
- 1/2 cup quick cooking pearl barley
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 clove garlic, minced
