fried green tomatoes
Fried green tomatoes are an Appalachian, Southern favorite in the spring and summer time. Stories have been written, movies made, and even an old-time traditional song called "Home Grown Tomatoes" mentions this simple un-ripe fruit delicacy. There must be a thousand ways to fix them and like options everybody has their own, this is mine...

How To Make fried green tomatoes
-
Step 1Mix together butter milk, liquid smoke and kitchen bouquet. Wash and slice green tomatoes 1/8-1/4 inch thick, soak tomato slices in buttermilk at least 30 min over night is even better.
-
Step 2Mix all dry ingredients together in bowl, set aside.
-
Step 3In a cast iron skillet heat peanut oil to 350, dredge each slice of tomato in the dry mixture and brown on each side until golden, do not over crowd, remove and drain on paper towels.
-
Step 4Have them on the side or try a BLT using them, I like mine with a little yum yum sauce. Here's Bea's recipe https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/appetizer/appetizer-other-appetizer/julias-yum-yum-sauce.html
