Cold Weather Comfort Food: White Rice with a Twist

Andy Anderson !

This side dish is an interesting departure from normal boiled rice. We’re going to infuse some flavor into the rice, and then use it as a tasty side dish for chicken, pork, or most any dish that uses rice as an accompaniment.

The addition of the tamari gives the rice an almost Oriental flavor, and helps to bring the other flavors together. It’s a simple dish to prepare, but sometimes simple is the best.

So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

How to Make Cold Weather Comfort Food: White Rice with a Twist

  2. Gather your ingredients.
  3. Add the grapeseed oil and butter to a saucepan over medium heat.
  4. Chef’s Note: The saucepan should be large enough to hold all the ingredients, and have a tight-fitting lid.
  5. When the foaming subsides, give the saucepan a swirl to mix the oil and butter, and then add the minced garlic and cayenne pepper.
  6. Cook (continually stirring) until the garlic just begins to color, 3 to 4 minutes.
  7. Add the salt, water, and tamari (if using) to the pan.
  8. Raise the heat and bring the water to the boil.
  9. Add the rice and stir to combine.
  10. Cover, reduce heat to low, and allow the rice to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
  11. Remove from heat, and allow to rest, covered for 5 minutes.
  12. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve as a side with your favorite dishes. Enjoy.
  13. Chef’s Note: I love this rice with chicken and pork stew dishes, as well as Oriental dishes that call for rice. It’s easy to make and the combination of the garlic, cayenne, and tamari, make for a tasty departure from ordinary white rice.
  14. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
