best homemade red enchilada sauce

You'll never want to buy a can of enchilada sauce again ! I tried every brand I could find. All tasted like the can or too bitter. And made tons of tomato based recipes, but still not the same as in the restaurants. Until I found a recipe in a community cookbook about 20 years ago and adjusted it to what I think is one if not the best I have ever tasted. Now I compare theirs to mine.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons mild chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano, dried
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 8 tablespoons flour
  • 4 tablespoons crisco or oil of your choice
  • 6 cups chicken broth

How To Make best homemade red enchilada sauce

  • Step 1
    Melt oil in large sauce pan over med-low heat. Add all the spices,flour at once and whisk over medium heat for 1 - 2 minutes to cook the flour so it will not taste like paste.
  • Step 2
    Add the 6 cups hot chicken broth and stir to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
