This is a great old-fashioned, heirloom recipe for a "not too sweet" frosting. Both my mother and grandmother used this.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons butter, unsalted
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

How To Make old fashioned cooked frosting

  • Step 1
    Whisk together the flour and milk in a small saucepan.
  • Step 2
    Stirring constantly over med-low heat, cook to a thick paste. Let cool completely.
  • Step 3
    Cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
  • Step 4
    Beat in the vanilla.
  • Step 5
    Beat in the cooled milk paste until it is the consistency of whipped cream.
