These squares are cut small because they are so rich. Wonderful served with either coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • - 2/3 cup butter
  • - 1/4 cup white sugar
  • - 1 cup flour, all purpose
  • - 1/4 cup cornflour
  • - 1/2 cup butter
  • - 1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
  • - 2 tbsp corn syrup, light
  • - 1/2 cup condensed milk, sweetened
  • - 1 tsp vanilla (optional)
  • - pinch of salt
  • - 1 1/4 cups chocolate chips, dairy milk

How To Make caramel squares

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Step 2
    To a large bowl add 2/3 cup butter, white sugar and both flours, mixing evenly until it is crumbly.
  • Step 3
    Press into a square 8" - 9" pan and bake for 20 - 25 minutes.
  • Step 4
    In a large pot, add 1/2 cup butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt; bring to a boil and keep boiling hard for 5 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Remove the pot from the heat and using a wooden spoon beat vigorously for 3 - 5 minutes, then pour over the baked crust and allow to cool completely. ( the caramel will firm up)
  • Step 6
    Melt the chocolate and stir until nice and smooth, then pour over the caramel layer, spreading to evenly cover the squares. Chill and cut into small squares.
