This is my favorite oatmeal cookie recipe that I have used for forty years. I have included suggestions for some delicious variations, also. Bet you can't eat just one!

Ingredients

  • 3 c
    quick cooking oats (uncooked)
  • 1 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 3/4 c
    butter flavor shortening
  • 1/2 c
    white sugar
  • 1 c
    firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 c
    water
  • 1 tsp
    pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large
    egg

How to Make CHEWY OATMEAL COOKIES

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Combine first four ingredients and set aside.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, beat together remaining ingredients until creamy.
  4. Add the flour and oat mixture and mix well.
  5. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto a parchment lined cookie sheet or greased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees F for 12 to 14 minutes.
  7. Remove from cookie sheet and place on parchment paper or foil on flat surface to cool.
  8. As soon as cool, store in air-tight container.
  9. Recipe may be doubled.
  10. NOTE: Great add-ins include dried and chopped cherries or cranberries, chocolate chips, pecans or peanuts, raisins, butterscotch chips, chopped dried pineapple and coconut, white chocolate chips and chopped macadamia nuts.
