This is my favorite oatmeal cookie recipe that I have used for forty years. I have included suggestions for some delicious variations, also. Bet you can't eat just one!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups quick cooking oats (uncooked)
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter flavor shortening
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg

How To Make chewy oatmeal cookies

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Step 2
    Combine first four ingredients and set aside.
  • Step 3
    In the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, beat together remaining ingredients until creamy.
  • Step 4
    Add the flour and oat mixture and mix well.
  • Step 5
    Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto a parchment lined cookie sheet or greased cookie sheet.
  • Step 6
    Bake at 350 degrees F for 12 to 14 minutes.
  • Step 7
    Remove from cookie sheet and place on parchment paper or foil on flat surface to cool.
  • Step 8
    As soon as cool, store in air-tight container.
  • Step 9
    Recipe may be doubled.
  • Step 10
    NOTE: Great add-ins include dried and chopped cherries or cranberries, chocolate chips, pecans or peanuts, raisins, butterscotch chips, chopped dried pineapple and coconut, white chocolate chips and chopped macadamia nuts.
