There's nothing better than homemade boiled icing for a German chocolate cake, still warm from the stove. You'll never use ready made again it just isn't the same

Ingredients

  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks, reserve whites
  • 1/2 cup butter (or margarine)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups coconut
  • 1 cup pecans, in pieces (more to taste)

How To Make boiled icing, for german chocolate cake

  • Step 1
    Mix together first 5 ingredients in pan on stovetop over medium heat until thick. Stirring constantly, careful not to scorch
  • Step 2
    Remove from heat and beat by hand until thick and looses some of the gloss. Add coconut and pecans
  • Step 3
    Pour almost 1/2 over first layer of cooled German Chocolate Cake. Then put next layer on and pour remaining frosting and let drip down the sides.
