There's nothing better than homemade boiled icing for a German chocolate cake, still warm from the stove. You'll never use ready made again it just isn't the same

evaporated milk
1 c
3 large
egg yolks, reserve whites
1/2 c
butter (or margarine)
1 tsp
vanilla extract
1 1/3 c
1 c
pecans, in pieces (more to taste)

How to Make Boiled icing, for German Chocolate Cake


  • 1Mix together first 5 ingredients in pan on stovetop over medium heat until thick. Stirring constantly, careful not to scorch
  • 2Remove from heat and beat by hand until thick and looses some of the gloss. Add coconut and pecans
  • 3Pour almost 1/2 over first layer of cooled German Chocolate Cake. Then put next layer on and pour remaining frosting and let drip down the sides.
