My Aunt Nona gave me this recipe at a "cookbook shower" before my wedding. It is very moist. I like to double the cinnamon. I will be doubling the cocoa powder next time to see if it makes a richer chocolate taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 3 Tbsp
    cocoa powder
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1 c
    water
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 2
    eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • FROSTING

  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 3 Tbsp
    cocoa powder
  • 1/3 c
    milk
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1-2 c
    powdered sugar
  • ·
    chopped nuts

How to Make Aunt Nona's Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a Bundt pan.
  2. In a small saucepan, bring butter, shortening, cocoa, and water just to a boil.
  3. Mix flour, sugar, soda and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Pour hot liquids over the dry ingredients and mix well.
  5. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla and mix well.
  6. Bake for 50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Frosting: Melt butter in a medium saucepan.
  8. Add cocoa and milk and bring to a boil.
  9. Remove from heat and pour into a clean mixing bowl.
  10. Add powdered sugar to desired thickness.
  11. Sprinkle cake with chopped nuts while frosting is warm.
