My Aunt Nona gave me this recipe at a "cookbook shower" before my wedding. It is very moist. I like to double the cinnamon. I will be doubling the cocoa powder next time to see if it makes a richer chocolate taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 - eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • FROSTING
  • 1 stick butter
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 cup powdered sugar
  • - chopped nuts

How To Make aunt nona's old-fashioned chocolate cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a Bundt pan.
  • Step 2
    In a small saucepan, bring butter, shortening, cocoa, and water just to a boil.
  • Step 3
    Mix flour, sugar, soda and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl.
  • Step 4
    Pour hot liquids over the dry ingredients and mix well.
  • Step 5
    Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla and mix well.
  • Step 6
    Bake for 50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
  • Step 7
    Frosting: Melt butter in a medium saucepan.
  • Step 8
    Add cocoa and milk and bring to a boil.
  • Step 9
    Remove from heat and pour into a clean mixing bowl.
  • Step 10
    Add powdered sugar to desired thickness.
  • Step 11
    Sprinkle cake with chopped nuts while frosting is warm.
