A version of this recipe is in my cookbook "SHARING OUR FAVORITE RECIPES".

But I have added a few additional ingredients,& I love the new results.

This dessert is quick & easy, & very tasty, & with the addition of Nuts, & the Chocolate Chips, it is so full of the cherry flavor with the addition of a large box of Jello Gelatin.

I even added a glaze so it is quite cheery & so full of the cherry pie filling flavor, you can't go wrong on such a simple & easy dessert. Try it and see if you don't agree.

The Original Recipe was submitted by my friend Beverly Alitz of McCallsburg, Iowa.

How to Make Cheery Cherry Dessert Squares

Step-by-Step

  • 1Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. To a medium size bowl add 2 sticks of softened butter.
  • 2Then add the sugar and beat together till blended.
  • 3Measure out flour salt, & baking powder, & stir together& set aside till needed.
  • 4Add jello to creamed mixture.
  • 5Beat till blended together.
  • 6Pour in almond & vanilla bean paste.
  • 7Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • 8Add flour in 3 intervals, beating well after each addition.
  • 9Grease or spray a 9X13X2 inch pan with butter or non stick cooking spray, & spread enough of batter to cover the bottom of the pan, about half of batter.
  • 10Then top with (1) can of cherry pie filling.
  • 11Then sprinkle top of cherry filling with chocolate chips, I prefer using Ghiradeli's Chocolate chips, & used them in this recipe, and sprinkle chopped nuts.
  • 12Now add remaining cake batter in dollops, using a tablespoon.
  • 13Bake in preheated 350 degrees F. oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until done.
  • 14REMOVE FROM OVEN AND ALLOW TO COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE ADDING GLAZE.
  • 15Prepare glaze by blending glaze ingredients in a small bowl, and add enough liquid till glaze reaches the spreading consistency you desire.
  • 16Drizzle over cooled Dessert.
  • 17Cut into squares & serve. Now you may use other flavors of pie fillings if desired.
