We love this frosting. It's been through 5 generations in our family. If I make this frosting when "certain" people are around, I have to guard the frosting or it disappears spoonful by spoonful.

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How To Make caramel frosting

  • Step 1
Melt butter in pan on top of stove over medium low heat.
  • Step 2
    Add brown sugar and milk.
  • Step 3
Boil over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring all the time.
  • Step 4
Remove, cool (just to luke warm and if it gets to thick you can place it back on the stove for a few minutes). I set the pan in a larger pan of cold water, stirring every 5 minutes, to cool it faster if I am in a hurry.
  • Step 5
Add vanilla and powdered sugar. Beat well with hand mixer and frost cake.
  • Step 6
    Will frost a 9x13-inch cake.
  • Step 7
If you want a thicker frosting then double this recipe if you are making a layer cake.
  • Step 8
This is the icing we use on the Autumn Surprise cake, but is good on about any cake you can think of.
