We love this frosting. It's been through 5 generations in our family. If I make this frosting when "certain" people are around, I have to guard the frosting or it disappears spoonful by spoonful.

Stove Top


1 stick
1 c
packed light brown sugar
1/4 c
2 c
powdered sugar
1 tsp
vanilla extract

How to Make Caramel Frosting


  • 1Melt butter in pan on top of stove over medium low heat.
  • 2Add brown sugar and milk.
  • 3Boil over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring all the time.
  • 4Remove, cool (just to luke warm and if it gets to thick you can place it back on the stove for a few minutes). I set the pan in a larger pan of cold water, stirring every 5 minutes, to cool it faster if I am in a hurry.
  • 5Add vanilla and powdered sugar. Beat well with hand mixer and frost cake.
  • 6Will frost a 9x13-inch cake.
  • 7If you want a thicker frosting then double this recipe if you are making a layer cake.
  • 8This is the icing we use on the Autumn Surprise cake, but is good on about any cake you can think of.
