This was the first bread recipe I ever baked, when I was a young teenager. It was easy, didn't need to sit and rise and it was yummy!

prep time 15 Min
cook time 45 Min
method Bake
yield 1 loaf

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1 1/2 cups buttermilk

How To Make irish soda bread

  • Step 1
In a large bowl, cut butter into flour until consistency of cornmeal. Stir in soda and salt.
  • Step 2
Beating constantly with large spoon or mixer, add enough buttermilk to form a firm ball.
  • Step 3
Knead dough in bowl for several minutes, then form a ball.
  • Step 4
On greased, lightly floured cookie sheet, with floured hands flatten dough to a circle 1 1/2" high. With floured knife, cut a cross 1/2" deep in center.
  • Step 5
Bake in 425 degree oven 35 - 45 minutes or until top is golden brown and loaf sounds hollow when lightly tapped. Cool on rack.
