southern cornbread
This is plain and simple southern style cornbread! Nope! No sugar in mine. Real southern cornbread doesn’t have sugar in it, in my opinion.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups cornmeal mix (stivers or martha white)
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk or regular sweet milk
How To Make southern cornbread
-
Step 1Preheat oven to 450 At this time you can add the teaspoon of oil into your cast iron pan and stick it in the oven to heat the oil in the pan (about 5 minutes) while you prepare the rest!
-
Step 2I just dump all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and whisk well.
-
Step 3It may be pretty thick (not pourable). If so, just add some more milk. I’ve added 1/4 cup extra milk to this mixture at times.
-
Step 4Carefully remove your hot pan from the oven and slowly pour in your batter. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
-
Step 5When I removed my baked cornbread I usually slather the top with butter, just letting it soak in! It’ll pull nicely away from the side of the pan. You can serve out of the pan or flip it out onto a serving plate.
-
Step 6No need to use cast iron, but if you do it makes the most wonderful crispy crunchy edges that everyone loves!
-
Step 7You could make muffins with this as well, adjust your bake time. I also fry it up in a shallow pan of hot oil, draining on paper towel’s.
