I got this recipe from some Amish friends and adapted it a bit. My kids will get into the bread box like they're getting into the cookie jar!

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups whole wheat flour
  • 4 cups all-purpose unbleached white flour
  • 6 teaspoons vital wheat gluten

How To Make kid friendly whole wheat bread

  • Step 1
Dissolve yeast into warm water. (I like to put the warm water in a large 4 cup glass measuring cup.)
  • Step 2
Combine butter, molasses, honey and salt. Mix well. Add yeast/water mixture.
  • Step 3
Mix flour and vital wheat gluten. I just stir them together with a fork. Add flour/gluten mixture gradually. Turn onto floured surface and knead until smooth. Place in greased bowl and let rise until double. (If you don't have a warm oven go ahead and place it in a sunbeam on your counter.) You can cover this with plastic wrap sprayed with non-stick spray or non-stick foil.
  • Step 4
Punch down. Let dough rest a few minutes. Shape into 4 loaves. Place in greased bread pans. Let rise about 2 hour. Bake at 375 for 35-40 minutes.
  • Step 5
Gently remove loaves from pans and let cool on wire or wood racks. Butter tops or drizzle with honey and then butter tops.
