Guinness Bread

Dee Stillwell

I found this recipe on last year. I made it twice for St Patrick's Day week. Once with Irish stew, and again with our Guinness corned beef, cabbage, carrots and red potatoes. It was very easy to make and so delicious and moist. I baked it in 2 smaller loaf pans instead of an 8"x8" pan.
Serve warm out of the oven with butter....yummm

  • 1 c
rolled oats, plus additional for top of bread
  • 2 c
whole wheat flour (can use white whole wheat)
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1/4 c
    butter, melted
  • 2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 c
  • 1 - 12oz bottle
    guinness stout beer

How to Make Guinness Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease an 8x8 inch baking pan. I used 2 small(not mini) loaf pans.
  2. Mix together the oats, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. In a separate large bowl, stir together the butter, vanilla, buttermilk, and Guinness® beer. Pour the flour mixture into the beer mixture, and gently stir until well blended. Pour batter into the prepared baking pan, and sprinkle with additional oats.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes @ 425 degrees, then turn the temperature down to 400 degrees and bake for an additional 30 minutes. If you use smaller pans, this will take less time to bake. Turn the oven off, open the door, and allow to cool for 30 minutes in the oven before turning out onto a wire rack.
    Enjoy warm with butter.
