The key to a soft tortilla is soft dough.

  • 1 c
    warm water
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/4 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/4 c
  • 1 1/2 c
    whole wheat flour (i use freshly ground)
  • 1/2-3/4 c
    unbleached all purpose flour

How to Make Flour Tortillas


  1. Place liquids in bowl.
  2. Add the dry ingredients.
  3. Knead until the dough is workable but not stiff. (Keep the dough moist for soft tortillas.)
  4. Let stand 10 minutes.
  5. Pull out golf size tortillas & place onto floured board.
  6. Either roll with floured rolling pin or press down with fingers. Of course you could press with a tortilla press if you have one. I like pressing down with my fingers because I feel like I get a better shaped tortilla.
  7. Cook on a griddle on both sides until slightly golden.
