Kids Make Kitchen a Warmer Place

Connor Shows Me How It's Done...

As many of you know, my daughter-in-law Krissi is my right-hand gal in the Test Kitchen. We enjoy spending hours together whipping up your recipes and discovering new techniques and flavors. So, when my grandson Connor asked if he could help us out, I was happy to make it an even bigger family affair.

Connor and I have been cooking together since he was old enough to walk. His enthusiasm and creativity is inspiring. I just love to see his skills developing and watch him delight in the fruits of his labor.

When pondering the perfect recipe for me and my Junior Kitchen Assistant to try, my mind jumped to member Teri Dunaway’s Butterscotch Pound Cake. It came to mind for several reasons; not only did it sound delicious, but the list of ingredients and steps were relatively few. What also made me zero-in was the touching note Teri added to her recipe sharing that this is the very first cake her own daughter ever made. I love family memories and wanted to pay tribute by carrying it on in my own kitchen.

As Connor and I worked to prepare the cake, he was hands-on every step of the way! He measured, he mixed, he poured, he was pretty much the champion of the kitchen. And as we watched the gooey baking cake turn to an irresistible golden, his eyes grew wide with pride and anticipation of that first, warm bite.

When the kitchen timer chimed, it was clear that it was going to be well worth our wait! This is a wonderful cake that is made all the sweeter by having the pleasure of preparing it with my grandson, the budding cook and apple of my eye.
