Ingredients

  • 12 lemons, medium to large, divided
  • 6 cups water, divided
  • 1 cup sugar, plus extra for dipping

Instructions

1. In a saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add 1 cup of sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. This usually takes 2 or 3 minutes. Then remove from heat and let it cool.

2. Slice 10 lemons in half and the other lemons into slices.

3. Dip lemons in sugar.

4. Put the cut lemons on a clean, hot grill over medium heat.

5. Cook with the lid down for 5 or 6 minutes until they are golden and caramelized.

6. Let the lemons cool slightly. Then juice, over a strainer, into a liquid measuring cup. Measure 1 cup of lemon juice.

7. Pour the lemon juice and simple syrup into a pitcher with 5 cups of water.

8. Stir until well mixed. Taste the lemonade and add more water to taste.

9. Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid, and place it in the fridge. Let it chill for a few hours or overnight before serving. It can be served immediately over ice, but the ice will melt quickly and dilute the lemonade.

10. When serving, add a little extra tartness with a few slices of grilled lemon to the pitcher and glasses. Click here to save this recipe to your Recipe Box.
