Tutorial: Homemade Popcorn Garland

Ever wondered how they used to make that classic popcorn garland that was strung around trees? Well, we did – so we decided to try it and it’s super easy. While it takes a bit of time, just pop in your favorite Christmas movie and get to work! We think it’s definitely worth it 🙂

Step 1: Prepare the Essentials

First of all, you might be asking what are the essentials? Well here’s what you’re going to need:
1. Fresh Cranberries (not dried cranberries)
2. Popped Popcorn (not buttered, we chose to make our own on the stove)
3. White Thread
4. Needle

Step 2: Set Everything Up

Make your life easy by pouring your popped popcorn and cranberries into 2 separate bowls. During this step, you should also get your thread ready. We did multiple 5 foot strings and doubled them to give the popcorn and cranberries more support. Highly recommend this tip! Not only does it make your garland stronger, it also feels less tedious by breaking apart the garland.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to tie the end of your thread. We had a bit of a mishap when we thought we finished our first garland, lifted it and alas, everything fell off. At least my dog was happy to clean up the popcorn mess!

Step 3: Get to Stringing

Pop in your favorite Christmas movie, pour a glass of wine, and start stringing your garland. To begin, thread your needle through the center/thick part of the piece of popcorn and go from there. We decided to do a 3 popcorn, 1 cranberry pattern.

Once you have a pattern going, you’ll find yourself flying along!

Step 4: Hang the Garland on the Tree

Yay, you’ve finished a few! We’re proud of you. Now start hanging them on your tree! Here’s a pro tip for you: only put the strings on the front. That way you don’t have to make endless amounts of garland and it can be our little secret.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and happy popcorn garland making!
