Katrina's StoryBack in the late 60's I had this salad at a friend's house and had to ask about it. The cook smiled and said it was called FIVE CUP salad because it has just five ingredients that you use just one cup each. I made it soon after and was not satisfied with the "one" cup. I tweaked it and to this day still make it my way. Try it and see what you think!
mandarin oranges, segnments
1 - 1/2 c
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS: MARASCHINO CHERRIES, CHOPPED NUTS, CANNED PEACHES, BLUEBERRIES OR FRUIT COCKTAIL.
1Mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and transfer to a pretty glass serving bowl.
2Eat it now or chill it for later. I can never chill it first... have to have some!

This is good but you can spruce it up some. Adding nuts, jello chunks(whichever color)and cottage cheese too. It's all in the preference, lol

Nuts would be good. This is a very old very classic recipe. I am sure it has been tampered with in many ways over the years, but this is the original... I think you need to use a large can of pineapple and a large can of oranges... still needs more coconut and more marshmallows then the original recipe says in my opinion... but we love it. This way is a small amount and two people can eat it up. If I add more it will be sitting too long. LOL

I am positive the 5 ingredients were pineapple, mandarin oranges, coconut, marshmallows and sour cream, but I always thought there was not enough coconut and marshmallows. It has been bugging me that it should come out so sloppy so I started thinking maybe the five ingredients were supposed to include some other fruit. So I went and added some cherries and nuts to what I have leftover. Now I think next time I make it I will add fruit cocktail, or blueberries, or maybe fresh strawberries. I am not done tweaking this one! LOL
