shannon's Notes:

Everything is better with butter, and this has plenty! my kids love this dish, I took it from an old recipe that my great grandma had and bumped it up a little came out great.

Directions

1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2
for the dough, mix flour, sugar and salt in a bowl.
cut in the cubed butter until resembles small peas. add milk and fold mixture out onto counter or board. knead dough slightly not too much just enough to bring all ingredients together. split the dough into two equal parts.
3
Roll on the the doughs out to about 1/4 to 1/2 in thickness. spread 3 tbs butter onto dough. mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together and take half and sprinkle onto buttered dough. roll the dough up like a cinnamon roll and cut into about 1" thickness. repeat with reserved dough. set aside and make sauce.
4
for the sauce
melt your butter and add brown sugar and cinnamon, nutmeg, stir until sugar is disolved. add cream and milk. bring to a boil and set aside.
5
pour a little sauce into buttered baking dishes. (just enough to cover bottom of pan) then you will lay your cut dough into the pan. you should have enough for 2 9x9 pans or one 9x18 whichever you prefer. then cover the rolls with the remaining sauce.
6
Put the rolls into a preheated 350 degree oven and bake for aprox. 45 min or until flaky and golden.

serve with ice cream or fresh whipping cream.

Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing your great-grandma's recipe. I would love to make these rolls, they look wonderful. I do have a question, though. Is the flour supposed to be self-rising flour or is it supposed to be all-purpose and have baking powder, yeast or something to make them rise that was omitted?

i would not put baking powder, i use the pie crust recipe because it comes out flakey and yummy, It is not supposed to be a real bread, more like a cobler. this is nothing like cinnamon rolls, something totally different. really yummy. I have not tried self rising flour but if u want a fluffy roll instead of a dense flakey roll then I guess u could use the self rising.

No where in your recipe do you say cut rolls in to 1/2" or 1" slices and place in baking pan, instead you are saying lay the entire roll (uncut?) into the baking pans, but in your picture you are showing cut rolls???? I am confused??????

I apologize if I sounded rude or mean........I did not mean to sound that way......was just needing clarification on the directions. :)

Shannon, thank you for the clarification. I didn't realize that the dough was like a pie crust. I was thinking that the rolls in the picture looked a lot like a cinnamon roll, as if the dough had risen, hence my question. I will try them when I have company to share with, there are just two of us and I am afraid I might eat the whole thing. Thanks again.

@janette Suber, I appoligize... I fixed that in step 3. thanks for noticing. I am real bad at recipies, I have been cooking so long that I do most things by sight. My gma's recipe is actually a pinch of this and a dash of that and I have modified it through the years to what you have now.

@Claudia McClaran thanks for noticing and asking, I have seen similar recipes with baking soda on this site, i think they look a little like bread because they soak up so much liquid. it is actually really flaky and yummy.

Oh @Janette Suber it was not rude at all but thanks, and I have seen a lady on youtube make similar butter rolls and not cut them up and she uses store bought pie crust, i have not tried this but if you want to check it out she calls them kentuky butter rolls i think.

yes @dee they do "look" like cinnamon rolls, but the photo deceives lol.... the dough in this recipe is more like a pie crust and not a bread. it is an amazing recipe and my family loves it. thanks for the comment, let me know if you try it and how u like it :)
