Made this for the 1st time tonight. Turned out very well. Whole family loved it. Some put a slice of bread on the bottom and on top and that was just to much bread. Soaked up all the broth. Will be making this again and again.

prep time 30 Min

method Stove Top
yield 4 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound sliced sweet onions
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 box 32 ounce beef brooth
  • 1 tablespoon a-1 steak sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon old bay seasonings
  • 4 slices toasted bread - french works well
  • 4 ounces shredded cheese mozzarella or other soft cheese

How To Make french onion soup

  • Step 1
Slice onions about 1/4" thick. Separate into individual rings. In large fry pan add oil and butter over medium heat, add onions. Fry onions till caramelized and tender.
  • Step 2
Pour beef broth, A-1 and seasonings into large dutch oven or slow cooker. Add cooked onions. Bring to a boil then turn to low and simmer. At least 1 hour. I had mine in the slow cooker for 4 hours.
  • Step 3
Meanwhile while soup is simmering take your 4 slices of bread and put on a cookie sheet in 350 degree oven and toast/dry out til dry all the way through. I made fresh french bread in my bread-maker and sliced it 1" thick and toasted in the over for approximately 15 minutes(7 minutes a side)
  • Step 4
Turn on your oven broiler to high. Fill 4 ovenproof soup bowls with onion soup, top with a slice of toasted bread and 1 oz shredded cheese or a slice of your favorite cheese. Put under broiler till cheese melts. Serve immediately.
