In lg pot, heaat oil over medium heat. Saute onion & garlic in oil 3 mins. Add broth, lentils, carrots, ham, bayleaf, salt & pepper.

Bring pot to boiling over med-high heat. Reduce heat to low.

simmer 45 min, or until lentils are tender. Remove bayleaf before serving.
