This was my favorite growing up and still is on New Year's Eve, which was a tradition. But, mom cooked it a few times during the year.

  • 1 large
    head of cabbage
  • 1 pkg
    bacon, save grease (12 oz)
  • 1 large
    onion, sliced in rings
  • 1/4 c
    vegetable oil
  • 1/4 c
    distilled vinegar
  • ·
    salt and pepper, to taste

How to Make Southern Fried Cabbage


  1. Cut up cabbage and slice the onions.
  2. Then in a Dutch oven, fry bacon till crisp. Remove bacon and set aside; save grease.
  3. Add oil to the grease.
  4. Add cabbage and onions. Fry up, tossing and turning every so often.
  5. Turn until it cooks down till clear and brownish. Takes about 1 hour.
  6. Once the cabbage is cooked, then add the vinegar.
  7. Add salt, pepper, and bacon. Allow to cook another 10 minutes or so.
