There is no question that I am invited to summer gatherings "to bring the baked beans." Guests will clamor to find out the ingredients; but rarely do I reveal using cloves.

How to Make Leslie's Baked Beans

Step-by-Step

  1. In a large pot, brown the sausage and bacon. Add chopped onion and minced garlic. (I do not drain the drippings.)
  2. Add vinegar, crushed pineapple, and seasonings (clove, cinnamon). Sometimes I shake some basil & tarragon into the mixture, too.
  3. Add pineapple, brown sugar, A-1 and honey or maple syrup. Stir.
  4. Empty mixture into a crock pot and cook on low for several hours; or into a baking dish and bake @ 350 degrees until thick and bubbly.
  5. Hint: Too thick? Add orange juice, apple juice or vinegar. Too thin? Cook longer or add more beans.
  6. Granish with fresh parsley or fresh basil Serve in heated crock pot, if possible.
