grilled sweet onion
I really love cooked onions as a side dish, so this captured my interest. It was in the Food Network magazine (July/August 2016, page 40) in a feature titled Grill Vegetables 101. It wasn't a recipe per se, just a grilling tip. So I've re-written in recipe format. I want to try this the next time we grill steaks outdoors. Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that become the most flavorful additions to a great meal.

- 1 large sweet onion (such as vidalia, walla walla)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- - salt
- - black pepper
How To Make grilled sweet onion
-
Step 1Peel onion, then slice onion into 3/4-inch rounds, keeping the rings together.
-
Step 2Lightly brush both sides of the onion slices with olive oil, then season lightly with a pinch of salt and pepper.
-
Step 3Place onions slices flat on preheated grill over indirect heat, and cook until grill-marked and tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Turn, and grill other side about 5 minutes more. The grilled rounds are excellent served on grilled burgers or to top a juicy grilled steak.
