My friend gave me this recipe. When she came to visit for a weekend, I decided to make it for her. She says she has a better recipe, yet, but until she chooses to share it, this is the one I'll use. I chose to make the patties, and fry them up. I slipped a patty into half a pita, add a little tzadziki sauce, and you have a nummy sandwich! They're easy to make ahead of time, too.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups canned chick peas, drained
  • 1 - red onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 1/2 ounces whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 2 small fresh red chilies
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
  • 1 - egg, beaten
  • 1 cup bread crumbs

How To Make falafel

  • Step 1
Put chick peas, onion, garlic, bread, chilies, spices, and cilantro in a food processor and process for 30 seconds. Stir and season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Step 2
Remove mixture from processor and shape into walnut sized balls.
  • Step 3
Place beaten egg in bowl, put bread crumbs on plate. Dip first in egg, then bread crumbs, shaking off excess.
  • Step 4
Heat oil to 350*F. Fry in oil 2 - 3 minutes. Drain and serve. OR, make into patties. Spray cookie sheet. Bake at 350*F for 10 minutes on each side, or until brown.
