Candied yams are a holiday side dish staple. This version uses fresh sweet potatoes and turns out delicious. It's made with simple ingredients and an easy dish to prepare. Ingredients

  • 3 lb
    fresh sweet potatoes
  • 2 c
    water
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 6 Tbsp
    butter, melted
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    brown sugar, light
  • 1 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    all spice (or 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg)

How to Make Candied Yams

For us, 4 sweet potatoes equaled 3 lbs. There was more than enough sauce so you could probably use up to 6 potatoes.

Step-by-Step

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Peel the sweet potato and place in a baking dish.
  2. Pour water and vanilla into the baking dish.
  3. Now, add both sugars, cinnamon, and allspice.
  4. Sprinkle butter over this.
  5. Cover the baking pan tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for about 65 minutes.
  6. Remove sweet potatoes from the oven.
  7. Slice or mash the potatoes.
