  • 1 2/3 c
    dried pinto beans
  • 1 medium
    onion, chopped
  • 1 c
    chunky salsa
  • 1/2 c
    packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp
    dried oregano
  • 1/8 to 1/4 tsp
    cayenne pepper

How to Make Brown Sugar Baked Beans


  1. Place beans in a Dutch oven or soup kettle; add water to cover by 2 inches. Bring to a boil; boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat; cover and let stand for 1 hour.
  2. Drain and rinse beans, discard water. Return beans to the Dutch oven. Add onions, enough water to cover by 2 inches. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 60-70 minutes or until beans are tender.
  3. Drain and discard liquid. Transfer to an ungreased 2-quart dish or bean pot. Add the remaining ingredients. Cover and bake at 350F for 25 minutes or until heated through.
