This is my mom's bread and butter pickle recipe. I believe she got it from her grandmother.

Ingredients For bread and butter pickles

    cucumbers, thinly sliced (about 12 pounds)
  • 8
    onions, thinly sliced (about 3 pounds)
  • 1/2 c
    salt
  • 5 c
    cider vinegar (5% acidity)
  • 5 c
    sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp
    ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp
    whole cloves
  • 1/2 tsp
    celery seeds

How To Make bread and butter pickles

    Combine the cucumber and onion in a large non-metal container; add the salt and stir well. Cover and let stand at room temperature for 3 hours. Drain well, and set aside.

    Combine the vinegar and the remaining ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil.

    Pack the cucumber mixture into 18 hot pint jars, filling to 1/2 inch from the top. Cover the cucumber mix with the hot vinegar mixture, filling to 1/2 inch from the top.

    Tilt to remove the air bubbles. Wipe the jar rims. Cover at once with metal lids, and screw on the bands. Process in boiling water for 10 minutes.
