baked beans (cleaner & low sugar)
(1 RATING)
Baked beans are one of my favorite things. I'm from the South & most baked beans here use canned pork & beans. One of the main ingredients in pork & beans is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). I dropped HFCS 3 years ago, so I had to find a healthier way to make baked beans. Honey & coconut sugar are natural sweeteners that actually have lots of health benefits. Ingredients
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 5-7 slices bacon, chopped
- 2 cans pinto beans (16 oz) or navy beans
- 3 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1/4 cup ketchup (no hfcs, i use hunts)
- 1 teaspoon lea & perrin's worcestershire sauce (no hfcs)
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar
How To Make baked beans (cleaner & low sugar)
-
Step 1Saute bacon and onion in a skillet with a little olive oil until onion is tender.
-
Step 2Drain the liquid from one can of beans, but use the liquid in the other can. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together including bacon and onion.
-
Step 3Place in square casserole dish and bake at 350 degrees or until hot and bubbly.
-
Step 4NOTE: Before putting in casserole dish, taste to see if any of the ingredients need to be adjusted. If you like it sweeter add more honey or sugar. If you like it spicier, add a little cayenne pepper or hot sauce. I know that bacon is not considered "clean", but it does not create inflammation & pain in my body like HFCS does.
