I am a fan of fairly straight-forward salsa... nothing too fancy or exotic. This basic recipe packs all the flavor punch you could want. I recently tried adding the oregano and now it's my new "secret" weapon... Give it a try!

Ingredients

  • 4 lb
    vine-ripened tomatoes
  • 1/2 c
    chopped onion
  • 1 c
    fresh cilantro
  • 1
    serrano or jalapeno chiles
  • 2 tsp
    minced garlic
  • 1 tsp
    sugar
  • 3 Tbsp
    lime juice
  • ·
    kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • ·
    oregano, dried, to taste

How to Make Fresh Tomato Salsa

Step-by-Step

  1. Quarter and seed tomatoes.
  2. Dice the tomatoes and transfer to a bowl.
  3. Finely chop onion and cilantro.
  4. Seed and chop the chiles.
  5. Stir chiles, onion, cilantro and garlic into tomatoes with sugar and lime juice and season with salt, pepper and oregano.
  6. Note: For a less chunky texture, try using a food processor or blender... works great!
