homemade tzatziki sauce

This classic Greek sauce goes so well with many proteins such as lamb, beef, chicken as well as with seafood like calamari!

Ingredients For homemade tzatziki sauce

  • 1/2 lg
    english cucumber, peeled
  • coarse sea salt, as needed
  • 2 c
    plain greek-style yogurt
  • 4 lg
    cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1/3 c
    fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp
    freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tsp
    lemon zest
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste (i always use mixed peppercorns)

How To Make homemade tzatziki sauce

  • 1
    Using large holes of the grater, grate cucumber over a bowl and then chop cucumber finely if needed; transfer to a fine sieve. Sprinkle kosher salt evenly and let sit for 30 minutes. Transfer cucumber in a cheese cloth and squeezing out excess water; set aside.

    In a bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, dill and pepper. Add the strained cucumber and mix well. Taste and adjust seasoning, if needed. Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. Just before serving, sprinkle a little more fresh chopped basil on top. Serve 8

    Note: Depending of the intensity of the dill, you may want to add more or less
