This is an old Southern slaw recipe I found folded up on a piece of paper in an old cookbook at my Moms. She had written "Good" on the side of the page.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium cabbage, shredded, about 3 pounds
  • 1 large onion, choppped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard

How To Make slaw

  • Step 1
    Combine the cabbage, onions, and green peppers (if using) in a large bowl. Sprinkle with sugar and stir well.
  • Step 2
    Cover and chill for 2 hours.
  • Step 3
    Combine the vinegar and remaining ingredients in a saucepan; bring to a boil and stir until the salt dissolves.
  • Step 4
    Pour the hot vinegar mixture over the cabbage mixture; toss well.
  • Step 5
    Cover and chill at least 2 hours. Serve with a slotted spoon.
