Typically the Russian idea of a salad isn't what we Americans would call a salad. It may be a dish of fruit, or a dish of vegetables--what we might call a side dish. Ingredients

  • 5 cups finely shredded cabbage
  • 2 medium apples
  • 1 small carrot
  • 1 teaspoon minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced dill or parsley
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

How To Make russian cole slaw

  • Step 1
    Sprinkle the shredded cabbage with salt and let stand 15 minutes, then scald for 3 minutes. Drain well and dry in a towel.
  • Step 2
    Chop the apples very fine or grate them on a coarse grater. Grate the carrot.
  • Step 3
    Mix all the ingredients together and let stand 30 minutes on ice (or in refrigerator) before serving.
