This recipe came to me from my grandmother, who got it from her mother, in the Mountains of western North Carolina, over 100 years ago. It has had only one modification over the last one hundred plus years; about 25 years ago, our family dr. suggested the addition of ginger. It did work better! Our family has used this for generations, usually with good results! Just don't drive when taking this. in fact, be prepared to go to sleep!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup vinegar or lemon juice (both work)
  • 1/2 cup grain alcohol (unless you have access to good moonshine!)
  • 2 tablespoons ginger

How To Make home made cough syrup

  • Step 1
combine all ingredients in a small saucepan on top of stove on med-low heat. Heat, stirring often until comes to a simmer. Remove from heat. Let cool on cabinet or stove top, but not on heat. When needed for cough, shake well, until all is mixed again. Take 2 T. by mouth, wrap up in blanket and relax, preferably in bed or at least in a recliner. Does tend to make one sleepy!
  • Step 2
NOTE-if you can't get grain alcohol or moonshine, you may substitute and good whiskey, scotch, bourbon, or other spirit that has a high proof. The higher the better. Store in high cabinet so young fingers can't reach.
