turkey burgers

I created these as an alternative to hamburgers. They are light and tangy. I love them on a whole wheat bun with a smear of Dijon mustard and and lettuce. Or topped with a slice of cranberry sauce. I have broiled these but never grilled them. If you want to try grilling them, I recommend you chill them for at least an hour before grilling.

Ingredients

  • one pound ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup onion, minced
  • one stick celery, minced
  • one clove garlic, crushed
  • one tablespoon oil
  • 1/3 cup chicken broth, low salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon gelatin, unflavored
  • eight - saltine crackers, crushed
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal, uncooked
  • one teaspoon thyme, dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon parsley flakes
  • one teaspoon dijon mustard
  • one tablespoon soy sauce, light
  • one small apples, granny smith, peeled, cored and grated
  • one pinch salt and pepper

How To Make turkey burgers

  • Step 1
    In a small skillet, heat the oil. Add the onion and celery. Cook for 5 minutes over med. heat til soft. Add minced garlic and dried thyme. Cook 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Step 2
    Dissolve gelatin into chicken broth. Let stand five minutes.
  • Step 3
    In a medium bowl, combine turkey, saltines, oatmeal, soy sauce, dijon mustard, parsley, salt and pepper. Fold in onion mixture and grated apple. Moisten with gelatin mixture.
  • Step 4
    Shape into four patties. Broil ten minutes per side.
