I love experimenting with chutney; there are endless possibilities to the ingredients. This one is a sweet and mild (and tiny bit tart) chutney... if you like it spicy, add a dash of red pepper flakes while it is simmering. It has a wonderful flavor combined with the salty dill pickle and smoked turkey. Just don't put this sandwich on a wimpy fluffy bread or it will just fall apart on you.

How To Make smoked turkey sandwich with dark cherry basil chutney

  • 1
Place cherries, mangos, sugar, vinegar, cardamom, jam and orange into small pot. Bring to a simmer. Continue to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • 2
Roll basil and slice strips into pot. Finely dice crystalized ginger and add to pot (about 1 teaspoon; if you like crystalized ginger like me, add a little more!)
  • 3
Simmer for about 2 more minutes. Turn off heat and let chutney sit without disturbing it; sauce will thicken upon standing (10 - 15 minutes).
  • 4
Assemble sandwich on a hard roll: turkey and then spooned in chutney (if not thick to your liking, use a slotted spoon to let drippings fall out before putting it on sandwich).
  • 5
Slice a fresh, cold dill pickle spear on top of chutney. Enjoy!
