ham steaks with mustard sauce (sallye)

Trying to find creative ways to use up this large ham I got on sale. This was a good choice, I think. I served it with a mixture of sweet and golden Yukon potatoes mashed together, sautéed spinach, steamed sweet corn and beer bread muffins. Mmm, good!

Ingredients

  • 4 slices ham steak
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • MUSTARD SAUCE
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 1 cup half and half milk
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 1to 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 pinch chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 pinch chopped chives

How To Make ham steaks with mustard sauce (sallye)

  • Step 1
    Place heavy skillet over medium high heat and add olive oil When oil is shimmering, add the ham steaks and cook about 15 minutes until lightly browned, turning once.
  • Step 2
    While ham is cooking, make the sauce.
  • Step 3
    Place heavy saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the flour, salt and pepper and stir continually with wooden spoon until a light roux is formed. Gradually add the milk, continuing to stir until liquid is smooth and creamy.
  • Step 4
    Turn heat down to a simmer and continue cooking sauce until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the mustard until well blended.
  • Step 5
    Place ham steaks on serving dish, ladle the mustard sauce equally over each slice. Garnish with cilantro and chives.
  • Step 6
    Good complimentary sides dishes are roasted vegetables, green salad and hot bread.
