. NO! Granny's Not Drunk!!! The Meatballs are!!! These Drunken Meatballs are from my Polish mother-in-law's mother... Theses are different and very good! ***The recipe can be made as written, or Cook the alcohol off in the drippings by adding alcohol first.... the taste is the same. *** This is also good as a party meatball... For party Meatballs, add onion to the meatballs and finely mince onion for the sauce. Play With Your Food! ox

Ingredients

  • BACON FAT FOR COOKING
  • 2 tablespoons bacon fat
  • MEATBALLS
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground pork
  • 3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 large eggs (beaten)
  • 1 package (sleeves) crackers (crumbled)
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg or cardamom
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest, grated
  • ONIONS
  • 2 large onions (sliced thin or chopped)
  • SAUCE
  • - pan drippings
  • 1 1/2 quarts beef broth (or boullion water)
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons corn starch
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 3/4 cup dry vermouth
  • 1/4 cup vodka

How To Make drunken granny meatballs !!!

  • Step 1
    Mix together all meatball ingredients. Refrigerate 90 minutes Or put in freezer for 15 minutes.
  • Step 2
    Form into 1-inch meatballs. Brown in bacon fat, when cooked, remove from frying pan to large bowl. Put onions in the pan for about 8-10 minutes over medium heat. Put the onions with the meatballs.
  • Step 3
    Add broth into pan and stir until it is boiling, this helps to get the pan drippings. Add corn starch mixed with milk. Stirring constantly, add in the sour cream sour cream, then the alcohol. It will thicken to a rich sauce.
  • Step 4
    Put the meatballs and onions into the pan and gently fold into the sauce. Remove from heat and serve!
  • Step 5
    *** Serve over noodles or mashed potatoes, with a salad or vegetable.
